Buffalo Lake Metis Settlement

BUFFALO LAKE METIS SETTLEMENT

Welcome to our community Buffalo Lake Métis Settlement where you will meet friendly people, who are proud of their heritage. Buffalo Lake Métis Settlement extends a warm welcome to visitors.

Buffalo Lake is one of eight Métis Settlements in Alberta and is comprised of 35,356 hectares of land, with a membership of 1,236 people. *Buffalo Lake is located near the towns of Boyle, Smoky Lake and Lac La Biche Alberta.

Our community has come a long way since our first settlers arrived in 1951. We have constructed 176 homes, several roads and driveways, a water treatment plant, a recreation facility, recreation grounds, the Head Start building, and a Family Centre. Currently we are in the midst of upgrading our water treatment plant including an additional raw water pond. Recent developments include a lagoon and lift station, a new public works shop, and fire hall.

We are happy to announce that we will be constructing a new Cultural Interpretive Centre; this project is scheduled to begin within the next few months. We owe our gratitude to the ”Building Canada Fund” who approved our application to enhance the community with an energy efficient building. The Cultural Interpretative Centre will allow the opportunity to promote our Métis culture as we will showcase local artisan’s crafts, our music, dance and Métis Cuisine.

Our community provides a variety of health and wellness programs in addition to various activities available for families of all ages. We support active youth participation in a variety of sports; including summer work projects which are designed to enhance their skills and to teach them the value of community and employability skills. We sponsor students with funds needed to take training in order to pursue their career plans. This positive approach has been beneficial to the numerous accomplishments made by Settlement members. Members have gone on to make monumental achievements – as police officers, lawyers, professional athletes, nurses, including other careers too numerous to mention.

The entrepreneurial spirit is very much alive in Buffalo Lake; there are approximately 28 home based businesses that provide a variety of products and services.

We have an organized social support group at the Buffalo Lake Senior’s Society. This group meets regularly, having meetings, dinners, and celebrations throughout the year. The senior’s Centre is owned and operated by the elders where they promote a strong community of well-being and unification. This strategy has been instrumental in setting the foundation for Buffalo Lake Métis Settlement.

Buffalo Lake hosts an annual rodeo where professional riders and ropers compete, and includes chuck wagon and chariot races, providing great entertainment for rodeo fans. During the rodeo a talent show and a slow pitch ball tournament is held, thereby meeting the entertainment tastes of everyone.

"Camping is available" at nearby North Buck Lake where there are 129 sites, 29 with power, a boat launch, wood sales, a day use area and a beautiful lake with sandy beaches. Drop by check out our rodeo; bring your camping gear, load up the family and invite your friends, we are sure you will have a wonderful time.

Sincerely,

Stan Delorme
Council Chairman
